The Game-Winning Save

Canon 5D Mark II, 70-200 f/2.8L with 1.4x. 235mm, ISO 800, 1/320 @ f/4.5.

I was up at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver today for the men’s qualification round ice hockey game between SUI and BLR. It was win-or-out for the two teams, and they played a very tight game that was was still a 2-2 tie after overtime. That meant it was time for a shootout.

The above photo is the game winning save by the Swiss goalie. It is so nice to be able to attend a sporting event where they do not mind people bringing in “professional” photography gear. While my priority was to watch the game, rather than photograph it, it was still nice to be able to whip out the camera for a few shots now and then. The only thing I couldn’t use was my monopod: I had it out prior to the game, and someone from the venue came and asked me to put the monopod away so I wouldn’t offend all the official photography people that had gone through a ton of work to get a press pass 🙂

Have you gone to the Vancouver Olympics yet? If so, what’s your experience been like taking pictures?
